#2. To become an attractive speaker.

by 김씨아내신씨 2023. 10. 6.

I watched a YouTube video in which a Korean announcer discussed good speaking skills. He mentioned several points, with the first one being "don't make the listener uncomfortable." In particular, he pointed out that Koreans sometimes preface their statements with phrases like "Don't be mad at this," only to follow with something negative about someone's personality or privacy that they wouldn't want others to know. He shared many valuable insights, but three of them left a strong impression on me.

The second point was, "Tell other people what they want to talk about, not just what you want to talk about." This means not only that you choose a topic that attracts the listener but also that you don't need to discuss something they don't want to hear. The words spoken are for the listener, not the speaker."

The third point, which gave me goosebumps, was about avoiding excessive adverbs like "very." I realized that I often used words like "so," "very," "really," and "actually" excessively. He suggested converting adverbs into descriptive phrases. For example, instead of saying, "It's so hot outside, and the water is so cold, so it's very, very refreshing," you can say, "It's scorching outside, and the water is icy cold, making it feel like I'm doing the ice bucket challenge." By providing vivid imagery related to the situation, it makes your speech more engaging and intelligent.

Lastly, he advised against dwelling on someone's faults. He explained that people tend to imitate those they focus on, so concentrating solely on someone's faults may lead you to adopt those same faults. While this advice is important, I must admit that it's challenging not to think about others' flaws. Personally, I struggle with this as well, so these words hold great value for me.

I first wrote it myself and then double-checked it with ChatGPT. I used only the words provided by ChatGPT because the last time, what I had written didn't look good.
